NUTRITION SPOTLIGHT:

How Hydration Is Key To Optimal Health

June 14, 2023 | By Tisha Riman

The summer heat has already hit hard, which means now, more than ever, is a great time to prioritize staying hydrated! And if you thought hydration was only about quenching your thirst—think again! Considering our bodies are primarily made up of water, drinking enough fluids is essential for optimal health. Keep reading to learn more!

Health Benefits of Hydration

1. It Impacts Your Energy Levels

Dehydration—even mild dehydration—can quickly lead to fatigue and low energy. So if you’re spending a lot of time outside or engaging in physical activity, make sure you’re getting enough fluids to keep up!

2. It Increases Cognitive Function

Even mild dehydration, around 1-3% fluid loss, can decrease cognitive function and impair our ability to focus. Not to mention dehydration is often a common cause of headaches!

3. It Keeps You Regular

And of course, we need to stay hydrated to keep things moving. Low fluid consumption can cause constipation, which can lead to uncomfortable bloating and impact the body’s ability to eliminate toxins and waste.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

The recommended amount of water to consume daily is about 3.7L for men and 2.7L for women. If that number sounds daunting, there’s good news—this also includes the foods and beverages you consume beyond water.

Our Favourite Ways To Hydrate

Of course, we love water, but if you’re looking for something with a little something extra, we’ve got you covered!

Fruits & Vegetables

That’s right! Eating water-rich fruits and veggies contributes to your hydration status! Opt for naturally hydrating produce like cucumber, watermelon, citrus and celery. Try it at Impact: Grab our seasonal Poke Bowl for a refreshing summer meal!

Smoothies

Smoothies are such an easy way to increase your nutrition, fibre and hydration status! Try it at Impact: The Super Green Smoothie is loaded with water-rich vegetables like zucchini and apple, while the coconut water provides electrolytes—perfect to help you stay hydrated!

Cold-Pressed Juices & Tonics:

Juices can be such a tasty way to stay hydrated and increase your nutrition intake! And Impact’s Cold-Pressed Tonics provide a refreshing drink that isn’t overly sweet! Try It At Impact: If you’re looking for something pre, during or post-workout, try any of our Impact Performance Waters—they have a high water content, plus additional health boosters like probiotics, spirulina or activated charcoal!

Iced Coffee & Iced Tea

Okay, this one might surprise you, but rest assured that your favourite coffee and tea beverages still contribute to your hydration status! While yes, caffeine does have diuretic properties, it isn’t enough to offset the amount of liquid you consume with it. That being said, it’s still important to be mindful of how much caffeine you’re consuming! Try It At Impact: Looking for a caffeine-free iced beverage you can feel good about? Try our Elderberry Hibiscus Iced Tea
